Department of Pharmacognosy

Pharmacognosy has evolved and developed over the years to adapt itself with the changing environment and is now fit to meet the challenges of the present and the future of drug discovery and development”.

The Department of Pharmacognosy is actively involved in an advanced and modern technique which helps in plant research. Many innovative plant extraction methods have been developed which helps in other streams like genetics, plant science, genomics and also plays a main role in formulation and standardisation of natural products including plant medicine. The faculty is determined in training the students in Nutraceuticals and Herbal medicines by emphasizing on traditional medicinal systems.

    Objectives:
    • To acquire knowledge about natural sources for medicines and discoveryof drugs.

    • To explore traditional medicinal plant knowledge base and Ayurvedic medicinal plants.

    • To know the chemical constituents of plants, animals, and minerals.

    • To isolate, estimate and characterize phytoconstituents from plant sources.

    • To screen biological activity of plant extract and isolated compounds from plant.

    • To develop new methods for quantitative and qualitative analysis of phytoconstituents by UV, TLC and HPLC methods.

    • To standardize medicinal plants, plant extract and phytoconstituents as per WHO guidelines.

    Thrust areas of research:

    • Isolation, estimation and characterization of phytoconstituents.

    • Chromatographic analysis of phytochemicals.

    • Screening for biological activity of plant extracts and isolated compounds.

    • Quantitative and qualitative analysis of phytoconstituents by UV, TLC and HPLC methods.

    • Formulation of single/poly herbal extract
