Department of Pharmacology

The Department of Pharmacology of NGSM Institute of Pharmaceutical Science was established in the year 2001. This department is committed to excellence in research and teaching. The disciplines of pharmacology and toxicology span basic mechanisms of drug discovery, action, metabolism, and distribution, along with studies of the therapeutic or adverse effects that chemicals/drugs have on biological systems It specializes in preclinical research which is integral part in the drug research prior test the drug substances on human’s i.e. clinical trials. The department has a team of dedicated staff strength and well equipped facilities including animal house “NUCARE” of the university. We carry out drug screening using various animal models for preclinical disease models in experimental animals in accordance with CPCSEA and GLP guidelines. The training on handling of laboratory animals for various experimental procedures is provided to the students.

We offer education and training process for all the programs of pharmacy. The department offers various programs which include D.Pharm B.Pharm, Pharm D, M. Pharm in Pharmacology and Ph. D.

To be nationally renowned for excellence in pharmacology research and with the ultimate goal of improving human health

To educate the students in the Pharmacology to acquire new expertise in pharmacology & toxicology, drug research and promote interdisciplinary research culture.

  • To provide knowledge of the basic pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamics of the drug and chemical agents to understand the mechanism of action, adverse effects, side effects, toxicity aspects, safe dosage regimen and therapeutic uses.
  • Encouraging students to develop basic animal handling skills required for conducting excellent research services in animal models
  • To generate ability for interpreting laboratory investigations and to study the mechanism of action and adverse effects of the drug
  • To provide students regarding the concepts of new drug development process, regulatory requirement for effective pre-clinical research and the significant roles and responsibilities of the investigators.
  • Know basics of pharmacology like history, scope & general principles.
  • Define drug and illustrate on types of drugs including their use.
  • Classify the various routes of administration with advantages and disadvantages.
  • Understand the process of new drug discovery and development of drug.
  • Understand the basics of pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamics.
  • Classify receptors and study the principles, site, mechanisms and factors modifying drug action.
  • Understand the concept of adverse drug reactions and drug toxicity so that it can get minimize.
  • Understand the concept of rational drug treatment during pregnancy and lactation, paediatric patients & in geriatric patients
  • Ability to apply the knowledge gained from the courses of the program
  • Ability to conduct research on experimental animals for exploring the drug action and its effect on the subjects.

B.Pharm

B.Pharm (Bachelor of Pharmacy) is a professional degree program Bachelor of Pharmacy (B. Pharm) is an undergraduate degree course in the field of Pharmacy education. The students those are interested in the medical field (except to become a doctor) can choose this course after the completion of class 12th (PCM/B).This duration of this professional post-graduate program is four years. A Bachelor of Pharmacy degree is the gateway for entering Pharmacy sector in Medical and Health Care Industry. One who pursues this degree studies core subjects including Pharmaceuticals, Pharmacology, Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Pharmacognosy. Pharmacists play an important role in the healthcare industry and thus play a pivotal role in contributing towards research in medicinal drugs as well as developing, manufacturing and supplying these medications into the Market and making this healthcare system a success.

Pharm D Program

Pharm D or Doctor of Pharmacy is a professional degree program. The duration of the entire programme is six years which includes an internship for a period one year. The students will undergo internship in various departments of the hospital during the sixth year. Successfully completing the program will lead to Doctor of Pharmacy degree. The program is designed to train students in the area of clinical pharmacy, Pharmacology and pharmaceutical care. Core subjects include Pharmacotherapeutics, hospital and Community Pharmacy, Clinical Pharmacy, Clinical Toxicology, Clinical Research, Pharmacoepidemiology and Pharmacoeconomics, Biopharmaceutics and Pharmacokinetics, Biostatistics and Research Methodology and Clerkship. Once the study duration is successfully completed the students will gain skills in pharmacotherapy of diseases, therapeutic usage of drugs, monitoring of patients, patient counselling, etc

The Pharm D graduates will have plentiful and diverse career options. To name some, Clinical Pharmacist in a health care organizations, pharmacovigilance and new drug development process in pharmaceutical industry, as a part of clinical research team in clinical research organizations, community pharmacist in public health sector, research and development, insurance companies and academics

M. Pharm- Pharmacology

Master of Pharmacy in Pharmacology is a postgraduate course. The eligibility required for the admission to the course is to qualify in B. Pharm (Bachelor of Pharmacy) from recognized institute. The duration of the study is two years. The curriculum will have four semesters. Core subjects include Clinical Pharmacology , Pharmacotherapeutics, hospital and Community Pharmacy, Clinical research, Principles of quality use of medicines, Pharmacoepidemiology and Pharmacoeconomics, Biopharmaceutics and Pharmacokinetics, Clinical pharmacokinetics and Therapeutic drug monitoring. Moreover the students will be exposed to various departments of the hospitals and trained in areas such, clinical pharmacy, pharmaceutical care, pharmacovigilance, drug information services and patient counselling.

Successful completion of this program one can find suitable career in areas such as Hospitals, Pharmaceutical companies, Clinical research organisations and Universities.
